CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Yogi
AGE: 21
CANON: Karneval

CANON HISTORY: Karneval Wiki
CANON PERSONALITY: Throughout the manga, Yogi is portrayed as a bright, friendly young man who is, at times, rather childish. He doesn’t do much to dissuade this notion with his love of a children’s character - Nyanperowna ( a giant, magical cat creature), whom he plays in Circus performances. Everything in his room involves this character, as do some of his clothing pieces. Pajamas. The answer is pajamas… and his underwear. He’s even afraid of the doctor. Though perhaps that is his more logical fear, as he was experimented on as a child after his home country was destroyed. He still retains the latent trauma, even if he does not remember that time very clearly.

Yogi tries to make friends with everyone around him, always with a bright smile on his face. He takes the most pleasure in making children smile, which is why he enjoys playing Nyanperowna so much. He considers every child he meets a friend, however temporary, and considers everyone on the Circus 2nd ship his family (even Hirato when he is being scary). Unless you prove yourself otherwise, Yogi will consider you a friend and can even be a bit forceful in his friendship, which can make him come across as annoying to others, or air headed in his seeming refusal to accept that someone would not want to be friends.

For all that he can come across as annoying, Yogi is fiercely protective of those he views as his friends. Protecting them and innocent people is his driving force for overcoming his fear of battles (a odd quirk, given that he is a key combat agent), and he will go to great lengths to defend them. It is scarier to lose a friend than it is to fight! Battle is one of the few times Yogi can be seen as serious. Protecting people is no laughing matter, after all, though he takes no joy in hurting others. Even if the Varuga are monsters, they were once people too.

Beneath the bright exterior, Yogi hides a more complicated persona. He often struggles with a sense of loneliness and loss, and dislikes being left out or left behind. He struggles when his friend’s leave or are far away. He obsessively texted Gareki when he left for school, and becomes upset to the point of crying when Gareki does not answer him. He tries his hardest to be likable, becoming flustered and upset when his efforts back fire.

Yogi’s most complicated facet is that of Silver Yogi, a split personality born from the trauma of a Varuga attack on his home and later experiments that injected Varuga cells in him by Kafka scientists. Silver Yogi carries many of the same traits as his blonde-haired self, but to a sharper degree. He becomes easily angered when people will not play with him, and will turn to insulting others because of it., and this can sometimes escalate to physical violence such as throwing someone across a room. Like Yogi he dislikes hurting people, though he blurs the line of ‘hurt’ and ‘playing’ as he enjoys battle where as Yogi does not. Yogi is not aware of Silver Yogi’s existence, except in his subconscious where he is able to talk to this other self. Sometimes he can relay messages, though for Yogi it is more a sense of deja vu, and that he really must do something such as apologize or say thank you. Silver Yogi is kept at bay by the allergy patch Yogi wears on his cheek given to him Dr. Akari, which helps to control the Varuga cells inside of Yogi.

At the end of the day Yogi simply always tries to do his best for the people around him, from making children smile with a Nyanperowna performance, to defeating Varuga. His heart is always in the right place, even though sometimes it gets him yelled at. Nothing a little Nyanperowna can’t fix!

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Yogi is an expert swordsman, preferring the use of two epee swords. They are his main weapon in battle and are used both on their own and as a control for his Circus skills that involve the use of thorns/vines. His main attack with them is called Dornen Kiste, the secondary is called Vase. He is considered one of the more powerful fighters in Circus, and is certainly the most post powerful combat member on the 2nd Ship.

Yogi is also able to fly/float with the use of his Circus bracelet. Both flying and his skills with vines are only possible with the use of a special bracelet from the Circus organization. Yogi is also quite athletic and has excellent acrobatic ability, which he uses in battle and during his performances as Nyanperowna.

‘Silver Yogi’ can also be considered a power, as he came about through a combination of traumatic experiments and the injection of varuga cells. When Silver Yogi is active he is several times stronger, but has limiters. He is only active when the ‘allergy’ patch is removed from Yogi’s cheek, and he can only be active for a limited time otherwise he runs the risk of killing his host (Yogi).

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Yogi Perowna
AU AGE: 21
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: His violet eyes have been changed to brown and he will lack battle scars. Yogi will also lack the ability to change into “Silver Yogi” (until it is regained), and his ‘allergy patch’ will be just that - a patch to help with his allergies to certain nuts, bee stings, and heavy pollen.

AU HISTORY:
Yogi was born February 11, and at the age of 3 was adopted by his new family, the Perowna’s. He doesn’t remember his birth parents, and has never felt the need to seek them out. His adoptive family was loving, and poured all their energy into him, especially as he was their only child. He did have several cousins, and while he was friends with them, he usually only saw them during the summers or during winter holidays. His parents were encouraging throughout his life in everything he put his mind towards, and while strict when it came to school work and getting him to focus, were happy to let him explore the world as he saw fit. They especially encouraged exploration of the arts, and Yogi found other interests in drawing (which he’s not great at it, but he enjoys it) and theatre. He speaks weekly with them now that he is at University, and goes home regularly during school holidays to visit.

When he was 6 he was enrolled in a gymnastics course as a way to help deal with his boundless energy, and he quickly took to the sport. As it turns out he was quiet good at it, and competed throughout his school years. He made his first deep friendships through his gymnastics program, and over time created a network of competitive friends as he traveled for competitions. He keeps up with most of them through social networks, but texts frequently with two or three whom he will still see at events. His parents tried to limit his competition and travel in his early school years so he wouldn’t miss out at school, but as he entered high school he was allowed to go to more competitions and received extra tutoring to compensate missed classes. He had a fairly close relationship with his coach, viewing the older man as a mix of mentor and brother-figure. He would often go to him to advice on a number of things, not just gymnastics related, especially when he was to embraced to ask his parents - like his first crush, or if he wasn’t getting along with someone. His coach was the one who encouraged Yogi to apply for a scholarship to Recolle University as part of the gymnastics team, sure that given Yogi’s record he could be granted one.

It was through gymnastics that he became interested in fashion, as he would often create designs for his competition uniforms and make his own as a way to save money for his family. His family was not underprivileged, but competition fees, lessons, travel, and later his tutor weren’t cheap either. Creating his own costumes eased some of the financial burden. He earned the money by working at his gym, helping with back-end paperwork sorting, working competitions, or coaching some of the younger children just starting out, which he very much enjoyed. He gained a reputation as a favorite for the young gymnasts and their parents with his positive attitude and encouragement.

Yogi also enjoyed making his own uniforms because it allowed him to customize his attire. He always enjoyed the outfits the girls wore more with their sparkling crystals and bright colors, and often found the ready-made male ensembles dull in comparison. He would share his designs with some of the other gymnasts, and later with the theatre group in his high school for costumes. He even made some of his designs for other gymnasts, which became a small side-business for him to help earn extra cash to pay for some of the costs of his sporting.

Theatre was his secondary outlet to perform as well as create, and especially enjoyed the challenges of body-suit style costumes or fantastical tales. He preferred the back scenes to being fully out in front of a crowd, though he’s definitely not afraid of putting on a show. Given his gymnastics schedule he always felt it was better if he took minor roles or helped backstage since full commitment could be difficult given the demands of training. Yogi always gave it his best, preferring to design in bright colors with a sense of drama. He became close with several people from the theatre program in his school, actually attending his high school prom with one of the girls from the group and making her dress. They remain close friends though they attend different universities, and he texts her daily.

Yogi chose to enroll in Fashion Design and Marketing upon receiving a scholarship from Recolle University. He takes just enough courses each year to qualify for the scholarship, and spends a good chunk of time with team practice outside of competitions and work. That’s not to say he doesn’t have a social life though. On the contrary. He quickly made friends both on his team, in his department, and in the city in general. He enjoys going to parties, especially if party games like Taboo or charades are involved; meeting at coffee shops, going to movies (but not scary ones!), and going to bars. He became enamored with the drag scene during one such bar outing, adoring the dramatic flare of the performances and fashion. He has actually performed a few times himself in outfits he created, usually with friends in attendance, but he enjoys it more when he gets the opportunity to create a new design for a local queen. Especially if he gets to test new methods outside of his classes or play with unconventional fabrics. The opportunity has not come up to often, but he throws himself into the project with glee whenever it does.

Most of Yogi’s school based expenses are paid for by his scholarship, but he does need some extra money, so he got a job in a local fabrics store. As he lives alone, he shoulders the cost of rent and food entirely himself, along with the cost of school materials. It’s an added bonus that in working for a fabric shop he gets a discount on materials. He also gets first hand experience in learning how to run a business, given that the shop is a small mom and pop style. Yogi is always eager to learn from the owners, as he hopes to open his own boutique one day, with a focus on clothing that makes people feel good. He wants his pieces to make people happy and feel comfortable in their own skins, and plans to remain in Recolle upon graduating to open his shop, or partner with someone else to open one (possibly the owners of the fabric store if he can convince them).

Recolle is a big, new adventure - even several years down the road. He learns and discovers new things every day, and hopes that will continue for many years to come.

AU PERSONALITY: Much of Yogi’s personality is the same as that of his canon self. He remains a bright, energetic young man eager to make friends. Literally anyone he meets he will make a friend of, or at least try to, and tries to be as social as possible outside of his job, school, and competitions. Though if you give him your phone number, prepare for a lot of texting, especially with stickers involved.

Given his less battle-centric and somewhat secretive lifestyle in Recolle, Yogi worries less for feeling lonely or losing friends. While he still dislikes it when he has to be away from his friends, he doesn’t worry of never seeing them again. With text messages and social media, he can interact with them almost 24/7. While there is a sense of separation, it lacks the sense of finality that his friends leaving in his home world usually has, which allows him to live without that constant sense of anxiety.

Yogi is also less prone to fighting than his canon counterpart. He doesn’t want to fight, at all, and has never been in a real fight in his life. He truly abhors violence of any kind, but even so he will step up and stand up for his friends when they’re in trouble. While he won’t outright attack anyone, he will defend his friends, and has a strong belief in right and wrong.

Ultimately Yogi wants to do the best he can, both for himself, his family, and his friends. He gives 100% to everything he does, even if he might whine about it, but he sees things through to the end and could never bear to let anyone down. You could never ask for a truer friend than Yogi - and that he can whip you up an extra pair of mittens when it gets cold is definitely a plus!
